What is Reiki?

Reiki can best be described as spiritual energy. The word itself is made up of two Japanese symbols Rei, meaning Spirit or Divine, and Ki meaning Universal Energy or Llfe Force.

t is the energy that exists in and around us and the practice of Reiki channels this universal life energy in order to promote spiritual, emotional and physical well-being.

Reiki was founded by a Japanese scholar and theologian, Mikao Usui in the early 20th century. He had explored a number of ancient religions and martial arts including Buddhism, Shintosim and meditation traditions. He also studied the lives of those who had been able to heal others, such as Jesus and Buddha. Mikao Usui underwent a life-changing spiritual experience while on a fasting retreat in Tibet, where he found and developed a deep connection to a spiritual energy. He soon found that he was able to use his hands to allow that energy to flow to others to soothe pain, aid healing and balance emotions. In the years that followed, he trained others in the techniques that would lead them to that same level of spiritual understanding and, in turn, to be able to heal others.

Today, his teachings have spread across the world and brought spiritual and healing energy to practitioners and recipients alike.
